Waihi’s town branding - proud of its gold mining heritage. Waihi came into being because of gold and is still largely sustained due to the gold mining industry.
Our main street has a number of interesting features including some awesome statures and murals all in keeping with our mining heritage. Whenever there is an event the flags fly high on our wonderful heritage lamps posts. There is great shopping and many excellent cafés..

The Pit Rim walkway is also a must do while you are in Waihi. It takes about 1 hour. A well kept walking track with native plantings and great views of the Martha Pit on your trek.
The pit rim features many information signs around the whole walk to answer your questions. You can also call into the Waihi Visitor Centre and visit the Waihi Gold Story.
The Cornish Pumphouse and Rangatiri Statue up at the Martha Mine are Waihi icons. The Pumphouse was moved over 300 meters and is now one of the most photographed buildings in Waihi. There is also an excellent pit rim walkway.
You will find numerous old mining relics from the old mining days both in the Waihi Township and on surrounding walks.
There are numerous walks close to Waihi. This shot was taken out at the Karangahake Gorge where a group are heading along the walk into the 1km long old railway tunnel.
One of the swing bridges in the DOC Karangahake Gorge Reserve. Must do walks 10 minutes from Waihi. Featuring the Railway tunnel walk (1 hour) and the Windows Walk (45 mins).
